Alex Karweit

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Alex's appreciation for music began at a very early age. In kindergarten, he would skip recess in favor of listening to the Four Seasons by Vivaldi. At the age of 9, he was already playing trumpet, and dabbling on piano. His true immersion in playing music officially arrived four years later, when he began teaching himself Metallica songs on a beat up acoustic guitar. While learning lightning heavy metal solos on an acoustic guitar may have given him some chops, he knew that the promise land was songwriting. After years of influence by heavy but melodic bands like Alice in Chains, Megadeth, and Anthrax, the songwriting bug finally clicked the first time Jeff Buckley entered his ear. I had never cried listening to music before, and the first time I heard 'Grace', I just about lost it. That's when it all really began. Almost overnight, Alex developed his often floating and wailing tenor voice, and gave up lead guitar positions in bands to devote his energy to songwriting. Finally coming out of hiding armed with an arsenal of songs, he recorded his first EP, titled 'Wide Awake' in early 2005. A mostly acoustic recording session, the unique mix of influences can instantly be heard, from ballad-esque tracks like 'Choosing His Angels' to the downright dark and heavy 'Imagination'. Alex is currently planning his first major release, slated for summer 2006. Many of the songs to be included in the new album can be heard live in the SF Bay Area as he plays to packed houses with his backing 4 piece band.
